UAE unveils 1,000sqm beach for visually impaired in Abu Dhabi
Free entry includes one guest and transportation for People of Determination

Abu Dhabi has officially designated a 1,000-square-metre beach area exclusively for the visually impaired, located near Gate 3 of the Corniche.
The initiative, launched by the Department of Municipalities and Transport in collaboration with the Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination, aims to improve public space accessibility and aligns with the UAE’s broader push for inclusivity.
The beach operates daily from 6AM to 12AM, with swimming allowed from 6am until sunset. It has been recognised by the World Disability Union as a Disability-Friendly Beach, affirming its compliance with international accessibility standards.
Tailored features
Designed with safety and independence in mind, the new space offers a variety of features adapted specifically for visually impaired users. These include tactile tiles along the pathways, Braille signage, and alert bells placed at both ends of a guiding rope leading to the water.
The beach also includes an instructional Braille signboard outlining correct use of the swimming area and a fenced pathway with sound cues that direct users safely. A trained lifeguard is present at the designated swimming zone, ensuring additional safety for beachgoers.
A licensed nurse is stationed on-site during operating hours to provide first aid, reinforcing the commitment to the wellbeing of all visitors.
Accessible services
Visitors who are visually impaired are entitled to free access to the beach along with one accompanying guest. They can also take advantage of dedicated restrooms for People of Determination, floating wheelchairs for water access, accessible walkways, and designated parking spaces.
Transportation is another focal point of this project, with a free shuttle service available to People of Determination and senior citizens. Complimentary drinking water stations further enhance visitor comfort.
Community initiative
This inclusive beach project is part of a wider campaign celebrating the UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s declaration of 2025 as the “Year of Community.” The aim is to enhance community engagement and quality of life for People of Determination.
The Department of Municipalities and Transport, through Abu Dhabi City Municipality, continues to implement initiatives that reflect this national vision. The collaborative effort with the Zayed Higher Organisation highlights the government’s commitment to accessibility and integration.
Earlier efforts have included solar-powered ramps operated by remote control for people with disabilities at other Abu Dhabi beaches. These Seatrac systems, developed by a Greek firm, are designed to independently transport users from sand to sea, and will be installed at several locations including Corniche Public Beach and Al Bateen Ladies' Beach.
